Szechuan peppercorns are a popular choice when it comes to authentic Chinese cuisine. They can certainly add a punch to recipes and can be used sparingly to give a powerful flavour to Far Eastern, African and European inspired recipes. Szechuan, Sezchua or Sichuan as it can often be referred to, have a peppery flavour and an unmistakable aroma that is hard to substitute when it comes to cooking. It is neither hot like chilli flakes nor does it resemble the flavour of black pepper and can be hard to place a similar tasting spice. It originates in southwest China where spicy food is a popular choice of cuisine, these peppercorns can also be used in traditional herbal remedy.
